I Put a Spell on You

"I Put a Spell on You " is a 1956 rhythm and blues, shock rock song written by "Screaming" Jay Hawkins in November of that year. The song was originally intended to be blues ballad, but the group performing the song, including Jay Hawkins himself, were intoxicated during the recording session. This led to Screaming Jay's raw, guttural vocals for the song. The song inspired Alan Freed to have Jay perform the song on stage, but with the addition of voodoo imagery, creating Hawkins' stage character of a voodoo witch doctor. The song was later used as part of the feature film Hocus Pocus, when the Sanderson Sisters are at the Halloween party.
