Fictional character biography
Jigsaw's real name is John Kramer. He is called Jigsaw, because he cuts a puzzle shaped piece of flesh, in his victims who did not survive.
Kramer was diagnosed with colon cancer, and, as a result, began having a better respect for his life. However, he wanted to make people have a better appreciation for their lives, and therefore, kidnapped people whom he considered to have wronged him, such as the man who accidentally caused his wife to have a miscarriage, and put them through deadly tasks. These tasks are fatal if not completed successfully.
As opposed to other famous movie serial killers, such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Ghostface, Leatherface and Chucky, Jigsaw does not actually intend to kill his subjects; the purpose of his traps is to see if the subject has the will to survive, and thus inflict enough psychological trauma for the subjects to appreciate their life.
Jigsaw does not even reveal himself to be the mastermind behind all the traps that are set up. Rather, his robotic puppet, Billy, is shown telling the victims where they are, and how they can get out.
In the final Saw movie, Jigsaw is killed off by Mark Hoffman.
